Eleazar ben Pedat

R. Eleazar ben Pedat (also: Eleazar ben Pedat, usually without mention of the Father: Eleazar also: Leazar, not to be confused with the Tannaim Eleazar ben Shammua ) was an amora of the so -called third generation in Palestine. He probably died in the year 279

He was born there and Babylonians student of Samuel and Rab. Like many of the Palestinian amora of his generation he came to Palestine, where he was one of the main disciples and followers of Johanan. He took Johanan school in Tiberias, but died in the same year.

He was equally versed in Halacha and Aggadah. It is scattered throughout the Talmud repeatedly cited. He praised especially the virtues of justice and charity.

From a priestly family coming, he took - similar Hiya bar Abba II - no priests gifts to. He was penniless, weak and sickly, but was referred because of his spiritual gifts and because of his extensive knowledge as overlord of Palestine. The Talmud provides numerous examples and stories about his humility and modesty.

His Haupttradenten are Abbahu and Benjamin ben Yefet.
