Johanan bar Nappaha

Yochanan ( [ God is merciful, hellenized: John ], R. Yochanan bar ( or ben ) Nappaha ( the blacksmith ), usually simply Rabbi Yochanan; * 180 in Sepphoris, † 209 ) was a of Palestinian amora of the second generation.

He was in Galilee, created (according to Maimonides ) with his school the basis of the Talmud Yerushalmi ( Talmud Pallet ). His teachers were particularly Yannai, and Hanina ben Chama Hoshayah and possibly also Judah ha - Nasi. Among his contemporaries stands Simeon b. Laqisch forth; his contemporary was also Rab Yehudah bar Jechezqel ( Pes 118a). Yochanan taught initially in his native city of Sepphoris, and later in Tiberias in the study house founded by him. He was said to be 80 years school principal ( malakh ) before he ( allegedly) died 279.

His students have included Abbahu, Ammi, Assi II, Eleazar ben Pedat, Jose ben Hanina Hiyya II and Simeon ben Abba. His disputations with his brother- Resch Laqisch in Tiberias have become decisive for the Talmudic dialectic ( pilpul ).

Yochanan is also known for its high estimate of Tannaitic sources; to his halakhic commentaries he drew both the Mishnah as well baraitot zoom. Yohanan developed while following views: Up to three exceptions, the halacha of the opinion of Gamaliel II follow; the view Rabbi Yehuda was the Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Jose Rabbi Yehuda preferable; halacha always correspond to the anonymous Mishnah.
