Elementary (operating system)

Is an elementary arisen in 2007 free software project that was originally a collection of programs and designs for Ubuntu compiled, which strongly oriented on the "look and feel " of Mac OS X. Since March 2011 there is a special Ubuntu -based Linux distribution under the name of elementary OS. As elementary OS Luna the current version was published on 11 August 2013.

Elementary OS

Elementary OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 12.04, which will seek to provide easy -to-use standard programs available so that the user need less to use the terminal.

A unique aspect of elementary OS is the commitment to native GTK programs. Unlike other Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Mint, and others) that contain cross-platform applications such as Mozilla Firefox or LibreOffice, has the elementary team decided that all programs in the interests of consistency, image size, and the speed on the same widget toolkit should have. The systematic introduction of lesser-known programs, such as the Abiword word processor and Gnumeric spreadsheet led to conflicts between some developers.

The first stable version, codenamed ' Jupiter ', was released on March 31, 2011. It contains only four programs in the elementary project, which were stable at the time of publication: postman, Dexter, Nautilus elementary and Lingo. In addition, it contains two programs that are influenced by the elementary projects: Midori (browser) and Docky. Non essential daemons and services have been removed, so it 's much faster than Ubuntu, on which it is based.

Elementary project

The elementary project consists of a number of sub- projects. Some of them are "what if " experiments, while others mature and are widely used. Meanwhile, developers mostly prefer the Vala programming language and the GTK toolkit 3. Today, all software projects of the project ( including the scripts that are used for the assembly of elementary OS) are hosted on Canonical's Launchpad service.

Active Projects

  • The Pantheon desktop environment, which is composed, among others, from Pantheon Wallpaper, Pantheon Terminal, Plank, Wingpanel and Switchboard.
  • The elementary icon theme, created on 21 September 2007.
  • EGTK, a GTK theme and a window theme, created on April 11, 2008.
  • ( Pantheon ) files, a file manager, which was created as a fork of Marlin on May 7, 2012.
  • Lingo (before Purple ), a dictionary program, created on 24 January 2011.

  • Scratch, a text editor with built-in terminal, color highlighting for many programming languages, and support for plugins.
  • Noise, a simple music management and playback program.
  • Slingshot, a program launcher.
  • Wingpanel, a replacement for the traditional Gnome Panel, developed a lightweight container for system or program indicators and notification icons to be.
  • ( Pantheon ) terminal, a replacement for the Gnome terminal.
  • Switchboard, a modular system administration panel, which can be extended by third party developers.

Finished projects

  • Sezen, a proof- of-concept file manager and gnome panel applet that provides an integration with zeitgeist, created on April 7, 2010.
  • Dash, another file manager, created on 30 March 2010.
  • EGDM, a GDM screen, created on 31 March 2009. Does not work because of the new theme system in GDM.
  • Nautilus - elementary, a version of Nautilus with a revamped user interface, created on March 5, 2010. It has a stable version and is part of elementary OS 0.1. Was later replaced in favor of Marlin and is no longer being developed.
  • Rhythm -e and Rhythmarty, a patch and an expansion for the Rhythmbox music playback program. If later in favor of Noise (formerly known as ' BeatBox ' known) replaced.
  • Postman, an e -mail program, created on 6 July 2010 .. The development was in favor of Geary in the still small team set for extra effort.

From elementary team split projects

2012, some software projects have split off from the elementary team due to disagreements between the main authors of the software and the elementary team. The main authors of the software you want to absplitten with their software by the team, usually called a compulsion by the elementary program policies as the reason. These policies, Human Interface Guidelines (HIG ), called write among other things, how a program has to behave, and describe in detail the surface of an ideal elementary program.

The first project was going BeatBox from which the Fork Noise was. Later, from the software Marlin by the author ammonkey, who also comes Nautilus elementary, then the Fork ( Pantheon ) files.

Postponed projects

  • AppCenter, a replacement for the Ubuntu Software Center.
  • DevKit, a simple and intuitive GUI toolkit for developers that makes desktop -than- your - IDE use, with a strong focus on the Launchpad integration and automation of repetitive tasks related to the development.

Affected projects

Several other projects have been heavily influenced by elementary or developed in collaboration with the elementary team:

  • The Docky team works closely with the elementary team to develop Plank, a dock program.
  • The latest versions of Midori (browser) have been strongly influenced by elementary designers.
  • Strip, a comic - viewing program, is being developed in collaboration with the elementary team.
  • The minimalist music playback program Pogo was influenced by elementary project.
  • The video player Audience been heavily influenced by elementary project. Maybe it is part of the elementary project.
  • The user interface of the e -mail program, Geary has been heavily influenced by the elementary project, which is why it is also used in the current version of the distribution, elementary Luna, as the default e -mail program

The project is in the public

The elementary icon theme is very popular with Gnome users. It is the second most downloaded on OpenDesktop.org, the largest collection of icon themes for Gnome. The most downloaded icon - theme was inspired by the elementary icon theme.

The elementary icon theme has great influence on the design of free software: the default icon theme from Ubuntu since version 9.10, Humanity, is a derivative of elementary; There are several proposed symbol Themes for LibreOffice are based on elementary or have been affected by it, while all the other emerged from nowhere. Many other UI Themes took over parts of the Elementary project, or were inspired by it.

The elementary project is often referred to as a rapidly evolving desktop environment, and is put on a par with etabilierten projects such as Gnome and KDE.
