Her maternal grandparents were King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Andechs- Meranien, while her paternal grandparents Emperor Ivan Asen I. of Bulgaria and Empress Elena Evgenia from Bulgaria were.

First Elena Asenina was with Baldwin II of Courtenay, the last emperor of the Latin Empire, engaged.

Elena and Theodore had three children: John IV Laskaris, Irene Doukaina Laskarina, the later Constantine Tich Asen married, and Mary Doukaina Laskarina that Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas with, the despot of Epirus, was married.

Theodore died in 1259, whereupon his son, John Lascaris was emperor of Nicaea. Since John, however, was at this time only seven years old, a regency was created.
