Elena Mendoza

Elena Mendoza (born 1973 in Seville) is a Spanish composer of contemporary music and musical theater.

Life and career

Mendoza studied German in her hometown, piano and composition in Zaragoza at Teresa Catalán, in Augsburg with John Van Buren, in Dusseldorf at Manfred Trojahn and in Berlin with Hanspeter Kyburz. There followed several scholarships, including the Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt am Main. She lives and works in Berlin.

She is particularly interested timbral and dramaturgical issues in instrumental composition. Of special importance also have in their work the musical theater and the musical possibilities of language. In this regard, in 2007 with the musical theater production Niebla ( HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts ) set authoritative accents in close collaboration with the director Matthias Rebstock. With the same director, she worked on the second drama project La ciudad de las mentiras, on texts by Juan Carlos Onetti, commissioned by Gerard Mortier to Teatro Real in Madrid.

She has emex with performers such as ensemble recherche, Klang Forum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Vogler Quartet, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble, Ensemble Taller Sonoro, New Vocal Soloists Stuttgart, Ensemble Ascolta, KNM Berlin, Ensemble espai sonorous, Nuremberg Opera, Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg working among other things.

Their music has been featured in festivals such as Ars Musica Brussels, Witten Days for New Chamber Music, Eclat Stuttgart, March Musik Berlin, Dresden Festival of Contemporary Music, ultrasound Berlin, Nous Sons Barcelona, ​​Acanthes Metz, Styrian Autumn in Graz, Musica Viva Munich or musicadhoy Madrid. She has received numerous awards, such as the Fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude (2008), the Salzburg Music Prize 2011 (promotion price) or the Spanish Premio Nacional de Música 2010.

Elena Mendoza is actively working on the exchange and dissemination of recent musical languages ​​, including through Höranalyse and composition workshops. Since October 2007, she is also a lecturer in composition and experimental music at the Berlin University, since 2012 also a guest professor.

Your instrumental chamber music is to listen to a CD on label Kairos (2008), in collaboration with musicadhoy (Madrid ) and Germany radio culture. Another CD with Scenes from Niebla, accompanied by Fe de erratas and Gramática de lo indecible, was published in 2011 by the label Wergo, in cooperation with Germany Kultur and the German Music Council.
