Teatro Real

The Teatro Real (Spanish for " Royal Theatre " ) is an opera house in Madrid.

History

The construction of the Teatro Real, near the Palacio Real was inaugurated in the presence of Queen Isabella II in place of the former opera house De los Canos del Peral on 19 November 1850. In the following decades the house was one of the most important opera houses in Europe, but had to be closed in 1925 due to disrepair.

After decades of slumber, the Teatro Real in 1966 re-opened, but first as a pure concert hall without stage technology.

1969 14 Euro Vision Song Contest took place here.

1985 by the Ministry of Education setting up its own opera house in Madrid and decided to create the legal form of the Teatro Nacional Lírico Foundation. As venue of the operas first served the Teatro de la Zarzuela.

After several years of reconstruction, the Teatro Real was re-opened in 1997 and since then trying to build on old glory days.

The Teatro Real today

The theater with the irregular hexagonal plan has 1748 seats ( with orchestra seats: 1854). It is recorded at about 100 game days a year Stagionesystem. As an orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid serves.

The theater offers guided tours in several languages. The tours include the auditorium, the stage, workshops and rehearsal rooms.
