Elgol

Elgol ( Scottish Gaelic Ealaghol ) is located in the south of the Scottish Atlantic Isle of Skye crofter and fishing village with about 150 inhabitants ( 2001). As in most other towns on the belonging to the Inner Hebrides island in the Scottish Highlands is now also in Elgol tourism is a more primary source of income of the residents.

Origin of the name

According to tradition, the name " Elgol " derives from a battle that Aella, a follower of Vortigern, led against the Scots and Picts, and was designated " Aella -gol ".

Geography and access

Elgol is located on the coast of the Atlantic and the immediately underlying mountainside on the Strathaird peninsula. The mountainous terrain of the Cuillin Hills foothills in the area is dominated by grasslands.

The few houses stand along the last three kilometers of the only access road ( B8083 ). The as -lane asphalt road ( " single track road " ) developed route leads from the next bigger village of Broadford over approximately 23 kilometers to several settlements over to Elgol cross through grazing land for sheep and cows, so the road is repeatedly provided with cattle grids.

Tourism

Elgol is often precisely because of its remoteness, a destination for vacationers. Several hiking routes, such as start or end in the village along the coast.
