Elias B. Holmes

Elias Bellows Holmes ( May 22nd 1807 in Fletcher, Vermont, † July 31, 1866 in Brockport, New York ) was an American politician. From 1845 to 1849 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Elias Bellows Holmes was born about five years before the outbreak of the British - American War in Franklin County. He attended district schools and St. Albans Academy. After that, he taught at a school. He studied law in Pittsford. His admission to the bar, he received 1830. He retired in 1831 after Brockport, where he practiced law. He also went to agricultural activities. He also worked in transportation. Between 1840 and 1855 he worked at channel packet ships between Rochester and Buffalo. He was one of the promoters and builders of the Rochester & Niagara Falls Railroad. Up to the merger with the New York Central Railroad, he held the post of a director there. Politically he belonged to the Whig party.

In the congressional elections of 1844 for the 29th Congress Holmes was the 28th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Timothy Childs on March 4, 1845. He was re-elected once. Since he gave up for reelection in 1848, he retired after March 3, 1849 from the Congress.

After his time Congress he resumed his agricultural activities. He died about a year after the end of the civil war in Brockport. His body was then buried in the town cemetery.
