Eliodoro Camacho

Heliodorus Camacho (* 1831 in Inquisivi; † in La Paz, 1899) was a Bolivian politician of the late 19th century. The Heliodorus Camacho province in La Paz Department carries in his honor his name.

Although Camacho came from the La Paz Department, but grew up in Cochabamba. He founded the Liberal Party of Bolivia ( " Partido Liberal " ), which advocated religious freedom, a stricter separation of church and state, state recognition of civil marriage and divorce, and a strict adherence to democratic structures.

In the years 1879-1880 he participated as an officer of the army at the saltpeter from Chile and later played a central role in the Constitutional Convention of 1880, in which he, along with the leader of the Conservative Party ( " Partido Constitucional " ), Aniceto Arce, the foundation submitted to the national order after the lost war.

In the years 1884, 1888 and 1892, he ran as presidential candidate against the ruling Conservative Party, but lost in all three election dates. Convinced that election fraud was the reason for his defeat, he gave in 1894 the leadership of the Liberal Party to José Manuel Pando, who was elected president in 1899.

Camacho died in the same year in 1899 at the age of 68 years.
