Ellsworth with 3,120 inhabitants ( 2010) County Seat of Ellsworth County in the U.S. state of Kansas. The city lies at the Smoky Hill River in the center of the Great Plains. The distance to Wichita, the largest city in the state, is about 130 km to the southeast. Even closer is located about 50 kilometers east the tenth largest city of Salina.

History

Ellsworth was founded in 1867 on the site of the former Fort Ellsworth in its installation as Fort Harker a mile to the northeast. The early years of the town are characterized by frequent disputes with the Cheyenne and the dominance of various gunslingers.
