The Smoky Hill River is a 575 km long river in the center of the Great Plains of North America. It flows into the U.S. states of Colorado and Kansas.
Name
The River Smoky Hill River takes its name from the Smoky Hills region in North Central Kansas, through which it flows. The indigenous people of the Smoky Hill looked at him and the Kansas River together as a river and called it Chetolah and Okesee - sebo. Early maps of European explorers called the river is ( in combination with the Kansas River) as River of the Padoucas because its source in the designated as " Padouca " ( Comanche Territory ) area.

Geography
The Smoky Hill River has its origin in the High Plains in eastern Colorado, from where it flows in an easterly direction. The main river as well as the North Fork Smoky Hill River originate in Cheyenne County. Both streams take about 5 km west of Russell Springs each other in Logan County.
From there, the river continues its course in a predominantly easterly direction continuing through the Smoky Hills region. The Saline River, one of the two main tributaries, flows into the Smoky Hill River in eastern Saline County. The other major tributary, the Solomon River, meets the Smoky Hill River in the west of Dickinson County. The Smoky Hill River finally reaches the Republican River at Junction City (Kansas), with which it forms the Kansas River together.
The Smoky Hill River drains an area of 19260 km ².
At the Smoky Hill River are two reservoirs: Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Trego County and Kanopolis Lake in Ellsworth County.
The largest town on the Smoky Hill River is Salina. In addition to Junction City are currently following locations in Kansas on the River: Ellsworth, Marquette, Lindsborg and Abilene.
