Emanuel Witz

Emanuel joke (* June 27, 1717 in Biel, † December 11, 1797 ) was a Swiss painter.

Life

Joke was first clerk and then came by his brother, a sculptor, for drawing. He then received by Johann Rudolf Huber, Bern drawing lessons. In 1738 he moved to Paris, where he continued his training under the guidance of the painter Louis Galloche. He was friends with Edmé Bouchardon, François Boucher, Pierre -Jacques Cazes, Charles- Joseph Natoire and Charles André van Loo. He then worked in Spain and Portugal as a portrait, history and genre painter. After he had got into trouble in Spain, he returned in 1760 back to Biel.
