Embrun, Hautes-Alpes

Embrun is a French municipality with 6155 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

It is located on 871 m above sea level. NN on the banks of the Durance, high on a hill called, Le Roc, and has about 6400 inhabitants. Embrun is 38 km from Gap and 52 kilometers from Briançon and a famous seaside resort, since the water supply from the lake of Serre- Ponçon, located at the upper end of Embrun, takes place.

History

The city was at the time of the Romans Eburodunum, was the capital of the Gallic tribe of the Caturiger, and followed 364 Cemenelum (today Cimiez, a suburb of Nice) as the capital of the province of Alpes Maritimae. Eburodunum lay at the western end of the Alpine road that led down from Augusta Taurinum (Turin ) to Brigantio ( Briançon ) and from there the Durance in the Provence. From the 4th to the 18th century was Embrun seat of an archbishop, who bore the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. From 1790 to 1800 Embrun seat was one district administration, the department, from 1800 to 1926 sub-prefecture.

Worth seeing an old Franciscan monastery, the former palace of the Archbishop, the Tour Brune, a donjon from the 12th century, and especially the former Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 12th century, however, already bears clearly Gothic features. Embrunman

Since 1983, every year in mid-August is here ( go 3.8 km swimming, 188 km cycling 42.2 km running) to the Assumption with the Embrunman a Triathlon Long Distance and Olympic Distance discharged.
