EMD SD38-2

The EMD SD38 -2 is a series of diesel-electric locomotives, 6-axis of the U.S. locomotive manufacturer General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD ).

A total of 81 or 83 machines of this series were produced. The information in the literature are not entirely uniform. The SD38 largely corresponds to the sister series EMD SD40 -2.

Development

The SD38 -2 is a further development of the EMD SD38 series. Here sat down at EMD first time, a modular construction of the components. EMD offered the soon as Dash 2 (English for line 2) designated series, similar to its predecessor in three performance classes. In addition to the EMD SD38 -2 ( 1,500 kW ), a moderate (EMD SD40 -2 3000 hp, 2,250 kW) and a strong (EMD SD45 -2 3600 hp, 2,700 kW) developed sister series.

Construction

As with the EMD SD38 diesel locomotive family, EMD SD40 EMD SD45 and all three series are built on an identical frame. Thereby, the three series were the same length. Compared to the previous series of the framework, however, is extended by 0.91 meters. In contrast, the long build-up grew by only 0.41 meters, which is a large overhang of the locomotive frame revealed. In all the Dash 2 series newly developed bogies were installed which, according to the manufacturer, deliver greater pulling power compared to its predecessors. The SD 38-2 SD 40-2 and use the same diesel engine type EMD 16- 645E3. The type designation EMD 645 means that the engine had a swept volume of 645 cubic inches. The machines of the SD 40-2 series and SD38 - 2 had 16- cylinder engines. The engine of the SD 45 on the other hand has 20 cylinders. In contrast to the motor 40-2 SD SD 38-2 is not charged in order to achieve higher performance. The most obvious distinguishing feature of the SD 38-2 SD 40-2 is compared to the number of roof vents at the end of the vehicle. While the SD38 requires only 2 fans, the SD40 is equipped with three fans.

First order

The list of railway companies, the SD 38-2 for the first time introduced into service. Through mergers transferred in part the owners of the machines.
