Emek (movie theater)

The Emek Cinema, Turkish: Emek Sineması, is a cinema in the Yeşilçam Sokak ( Green Fir Street) in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district on the European side of Istanbul city.

Construction and use history

The theater and cinema later was part of one of the most prominent buildings of the Istiklal Caddesi, the 1882 built Serkildoryan, or Cercle d' Orient. The building in the style of historicism, the work of French architect Alexandre Vallaury was in at that time mainly by non- Turks lived in Beyoğlu, then still traditionally called Galata Here the multinational elite of the Ottoman Empire, bankers, ambassadors, high administration officials met in ' Büyük Kulüp ' ( ' Grand Club ') or in the Club des Chasseurs de Constantinople (Club of the hunters of Constantinople Opel ). The hall was used as a sports hall, 1909 as New Circus ( Yeni Sirk ) and as a Skating Palace, a skating hall. From 1919 to 1924 here played the Tiyatro Yeni ( New Theatre ). 1924, the hall under the name Melek Sineması became a cinema. The later renamed Emek cinema house and the surrounding cinemas in the Yeşilçam Street were the epitome of the Turkish cinema. It was here, among others, more than 23 years until 2010 Events of the International Istanbul Film Festival held international film festival in Istanbul.

The movie theater was last owned by the state social insurance, which in turn had leased to a private investor. End of May 2013 it was destroyed.

Fate of cinema

The end of 2011 was made possible by a court order the demolition of the cinema, to be replaced by a shopping center. With the demolition of the beginning of 2013 has begun.

Against this development protested in Istanbul Thousands of people, including famous actors like Rutkay Aziz and Tarık Akan, actress and television size Meltem Cumbul and film director Semih Kaplanoğlu.

An outline of the Art Nouveau monument would give UNESCO a reason for Istanbul to delete from the list of world cultural heritage. Since 2004, the organization already criticized that it lacked in the city on legal structures which cultural heritage can be effectively protected.
