Émile Gaboriau

Émile Gaboriau ( born November 9, 1832 in Saujon -en- Saintonge, Charente -Maritime, † September 28, 1873 in Paris) was a French writer. He was a pioneer of the detective novel and its main character, Inspector Lecoq regarded as the forerunner of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

Life

Gaboriau has various professions exercised: Employees for a lawyer, hussar in Africa, Marshal. First, he made a commitment for seven years in the army, but announced after a short time the contract to return to Paris, where he earned his living by writing their chronicles. Later, as secretary of Paul Féval, he discovered journalism.

Literary creation

Gaboriaus first novel, " The Affair Lerouge " was a great response. In the book Lecoq made her first appearance, first as a security agent to move to the famous inspector later. This figure is a model for the brilliant detective who is able to solve all the puzzles thanks to an incorruptible mind about logical conclusions. Unlike Sherlock Holmes, the investigation of Lecoq based on more realistic conditions and on the latest findings of the era in the field of criminology research. The figure of Lecoq was based on the person of Eugène François Vidocq (1775-1857), who had been both thief and policeman during his lifetime and the fact and fiction are mixed in his memoirs together.

First published as a serial novel in 1863 in the daily newspaper " Le Pays " Gaboriaus aroused novel " The Lerouge Affair " little attention, but as he was in 1866 again printed in the daily newspaper " Le Soleil ", he found immense appeal. After this success Gaboriau worked with the feature pages of a newspaper, the " Petit Journal". In 1872 he staged in collaboration with Jules Émile Baptiste Holstein on the basis of this novel, a play.

Gaboriaus detective stories spin around social tension and political intrigue. The environment descriptions in the novels are modeled on those " naturalistic " works. Also in this respect, his influence on the French crime novel is not without significance.
