Emilio Arrieta

Emilio Arrieta ( born October 21, 1823 in Puente la Reina (Navarra ), † February 11, 1894 in Madrid) was a Spanish composer.

Life

After the early death of his parents he lived first with an older sister in Madrid and got here first musical instruction. In the following years he lived alternately in Madrid and Milan, where he studied composition at the Conservatory with Niccolo Vaccai. He initially turned to opera composition, which he was able to achieve some success both in Spain and in Italy. In 1852 he experienced in Madrid the extraordinary success of the "big" Jugar con fuego zarzuela composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and made the decision to also address this genus. His career now took a very successful outcome. He was first appointed as a teacher of composition at the Madrid Conservatory and took over in 1868 and its management. The list of students of his composition classes contains many familiar names.

Arrieta was a prolific composer; especially after he had turned to the zarzuela, he created every year several of these works, some of which even after his death, still belong to the repertoire of Spanish stages. In addition - and in addition to the operas from his early period - have other compositions only the character of occasional works. In all this is clearly the influence of his Italian education to hear, although he also processed elements of Spanish folk music in his stage works.
