Emilio Serrano y Ruiz

Emilio Serrano ( born March 13, 1850 in Vitoria, Basque Country, † April 8, 1939 in Madrid) was a Spanish pianist and composer.

Life

Emilio Serrano lived since his early youth in Madrid and received at the conservatory his musical education. He studied piano with Damaso Zabalza, harmony with José Aranguren and composition under Emilio Arrieta. Serrano soon began to teach himself, and was transferred to the faculty after completing his training. In 1894 he took over as successor to the late Arrieta whose Chair of composition, which he held until 1920. In addition to his teaching, he was a prolific composer and also in many other functions in the musical life of the Spanish metropolis active. So he was a fine pianist at the Spanish royal family as a chamber musician, conducted some time the Royal Theatre and was a leading and respected figure of the former musical life in Madrid.

He was a versatile composer who also zarzuela, symphonic, chamber music and piano works created in addition to operas. He stood in the tradition of Spanish music of his time and was a staunch representative of the Spanish National Opera.
