Emine Sevgi Özdamar
Emine Sevgi Özdamar ( born August 10, 1946 in Malatya / Turkey ) is a German Turkish writer, actress and theater director of Kurdish origin.
Life
Emine Sevgi Özdamar grew up in Istanbul and Bursa. The age of 12 she was the first time in the State Theatre of Bursa on stage ( in the " Bourgeois Gentilhomme " by Molière ). As a 19 -year-old she came to Germany in 1965 for the first time, without any knowledge of German, and worked for two years in an electrical factory in West Berlin.
From 1967 to 1970 she attended acting school in Istanbul and had to 1976 first professional theater roles in Turkey. With the military coup of 1971, she lost as a member of the Turkish Workers' Party their future prospects in Turkey. Inspired by Heinrich Heine and Bertolt Brecht - inter alia of the song lyrics of a record that she had bought during their first stay in West Berlin - it was commissioned in 1976 for a assistant director at the Volksbühne in East Berlin. Since 1986 she is a freelance writer. She lives and works in Berlin.
Literary work
Besides her work as an actress Özdamar wrote from the outset plays, novels, poems and short stories. It is one of the most famous German Turkish authors. Between the guest worker literature of the 1980s and the serenity of the third generation, it occupies an intermediate position. The writer Feridun Zaimoğlu, whose " Kanak Sprak " creations reveal the influence of Özdamars style, only speaks in the highest terms of her. In May 2006, however, the German newspapers debated whether Zaimoglus novel "Leyla" is based on motives of Özdamars " Caravanserai ". Compared to the Frankfurter Rundschau Özdamar said, "that they are no allegations of plagiarism (...) have raised ".
For their works Özdamar received numerous awards, including the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1991, the Walter Hasenclever Prize of Aachen in 1993, the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize in 1999 and the artists price of NRW 2001. Moreover, they received 1995 New York Scholarship Fund of literature Darmstadt. In 2003, she was a writer-in Bergen- Enkheim. She is also the Kleist Prize winner and recipient of the 2004 Carl Zuckmayer medal.
In May 2007 Özdamar was included in the now 175 -member German Academy for Language and Literature.
