Emir Rodríguez Monegal

Emir Rodríguez Monegal ( born July 28, 1921 in Melo, † November 14, 1985 in New Haven, Connecticut) was an Uruguayan writer, linguist, and Lusitanist Hispanist, who taught in the United States.

Life and work

Rodríguez Monegal was as a writer for the Generación del 45 He was from 1945 feuilleton editor of the weekly Marcha, from 1949, besides the editor of other literary magazines. He received his Ph.D. in 1956 in Montevideo with the work of Andrés Bello y el Romanticismo Hispanoamericano ( published ud T. El otro Andrés Bello. A study of Bello 's literary life and work, Caracas 1969).

From 1957 to 1960 he held his researches in England. In the 60 years he held various visiting professorships and issued in Paris in 1966, the magazine Mundo Nuevo out. From 1969 until his death Rodríguez Monegal was a professor of Latin American contemporary literature at Yale University ( 1973-1976 Chairman of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese).

Rodríguez Monegal was a friend of Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda.
