Emmanuel, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen

Emanuel von Anhalt- Köthen ( born October 6, 1631 Plötzkau; † November 8, 1670 in Köthen ) from the family of Ascanians was Prince of Anhalt- Plötzkau and 1665 Prince of Anhalt - Köthen.

Life

Emanuel was the youngest son of Prince Augustus of Anhalt- Plötzkau (1575-1653) from his marriage with Sibyl (1590-1659), daughter of Count Johann Georg Solms- Laubach. He completed his education with a grand tour from 1657 and entered into the Swedish king Karl X Gustav services and fought for this in the war against Denmark. Here he was wounded at the storming of Copenhagen and was taken prisoner. After his release, he fought in the service of the Venetian Republic at the siege of Candia against the Turks.

Under the company name of the Aspirant, he was accepted as a member of the literary Fruitbearing society.

Emanuel followed his father and his two brothers Ernst Gottlieb Leberecht and 1653 in the government of Anhalt- Plötzkau. After the death of Prince Wilhelm Ludwig of Anhalt- Köthen he was Prince of Anhalt - Köthen in 1665, which he ruled jointly and in harmony with his brother Leberecht. Plötzkau was again returned to Anhalt- Bernburg. Emanuel died in 1670 and was buried in the royal crypt of the church of St. James in Köthen.

Marriage and issue

After his brother's death, Emanuel married on March 23, 1670 in Ilse castle with Anna Eleonore ( 1651-1690 ), daughter of Count Heinrich Ernst zu Stolberg. The only child of this marriage was born posthumously after the death of the father:
