Rhine

The Rhine Bridge Emmerich is 803 m, the longest suspension bridge in Germany and has 500 m, the largest span of a bridge in Germany. The design of the bridge was from the Civil Hellmut Homberg, architecture professor Heinrich Bartmann was instrumental in the design with.

The structure spans between Kleve and Emmerich at a height of about 30 m the Rhine at km 853.2. It is the northernmost German Rhine bridge. The flyover has two driving and parking lanes and two sidewalks, and is part of the federal highway 220, the Minister President of North Rhine -Westphalia, Franz Meyers, put on 2 May 1962 foundation. On 3 September 1965, the Emmerich Rhine Bridge was opened.

As part of the construction tender designed Fritz Leonhardt, under the advice of Gerd Lohmer, a mono cable suspension bridge with a streamlined roadway deck. Although the new construction by 15% was cheaper than the built, conventional design, it was never carried out because there is no experience about templates.

Construction

Suspension bridge

The real suspension bridge has with the two anchor blocks, a length of 893 m. It has a span of 151.5 m on the edge of fields and 500.0 m in the main field. The building has two 76.7 -meter-high steel pylons. The stems of the pylons are 5.8 m inclined up towards the bridge axis and connected by a 5.5 m-high crossbar. The trapezoidal stem cross-section of the river piers, the outer dimensions of 4.0 m in bridge longitudinal direction and 3.25 m in the transverse direction and at the pylon head of 2.5 m and 3.25 m.

Across the pylons are two support cables which consist of individual cables 61, out of 45 cm outside diameter at a distance of 16.8 m. The cable slack between pylon and bridge center is 55.56 m. On the supporting cables, the suspenders are attached at a distance of 15.15 m. These carry the 4.5 m high bridge superstructure made of steel. The superstructure consists of two longitudinal stiffening beams, which are designed as 70 cm wide pillar -less strut frame. Between the top chords of the truss span at a distance of 2.53 m, the cross member supporting the deck. This is a 22.5 m wide orthotropic plate which protrudes 2.5 m on both sides of the main beam. In the central opening, the bridge also on the bottom to ensure adequate stability has a wind bracing.

Approach bridge

Between river and approach bridge is a 37.5 m long anchor piers. The approach bridge on the left side of the Rhine is a five -span 341 m long concrete bridge. The spans enlarge, the abutment West starting from 59.5 m 64.5 m, 68.5 m and 72.5 m to 76.0 m in front of the anchoring pillars of the suspension bridge. Accordingly, the depth of the girder bridge of 3.04 m to 4.19 m grows. In the transverse direction, the building has has a twin-girder cross section with a deck slab, which protrudes on both sides 5.25 m and a width of 21.6 m.
