Emperor Kōbun

Kobun (Japanese弘文 天皇, Kobun - tennō; * 648, † 24 August 672 ) was the 39th Tenno of Japan. His birth name was Prince Ōtomo (大 友 皇子, Ōtomo no miko ). He reigned in the year 672 in Ōmi - kyō.

Kobun was the son of Emperor Tenji. At the birth of Kobun Tenji was very old. The Crown Prince was Prince Ōama (大海 人 皇子, Ōama no miko ), who later became Emperor Temmu. This was a brother Tenjis having the same mother ( or Kōgyoku Saimei had ). The mother Kōbuns came from none other hand, high noble family, the Kobun could have given political support. Emperor Tenji but had no more hope for another son because of his age. Therefore, he made despite its humble origin Prince Otomo to the next emperor.

Given the awkward situation for him Ōama decided to repeal its law and to move his whole family to Yoshino. After Tenjis death and Kōbuns throne Ōama raided by Yoshino about Ise Coming Mino (now Gifu Prefecture), the neighboring country of Omis, where both Tenji and kobun resided.

In the battle Ōama won, and when this information reached the yard, Kobun committed suicide with his family.

Until the Meiji era saw the imperial court in kobun no rightful emperor. The imperial title was posthumously awarded kobun 1869 by Emperor Meiji and only then was the name Kobun, which was also conceived during the Meiji period, on the list of the Japanese emperor.
