Engelbert Schücking

Engelbert L. Schücking, often cited in English Schucking, (* May 23, 1926 in Dortmund ) is a German theoretical physicist and astrophysicist who deals with cosmology and General Relativity (GR ).

Life

Engelbert Schücking came from an old, established in the Munsterland, originally from Coesfeld bourgeois patrician family that has produced many outstanding individuals over the centuries. Schücking is the youngest child Lothar Engelbert Schücking. He dealt in his youth with astronomy (observation sunspots ).

Schücking studied mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen ( among others Franz Rellich ) and the Hamburg University (degree in Mathematics 1955) and then received his doctorate in 1956 on gravitational theory in Pascual Jordan. His first publication on relativistic cosmology already in the Journal of Physics 1954. In his memories of Jordan, he describes that it initially resisted him to Jordan damaligem area of interest to work ( projective relativity theory with variable gravitational constant ), which appeared to him abstruse. Schücking found so but quick access to international research in ART, first in Hamburg, where Jürgen Ehlers and Wolfgang Kundt in Jordan conducted research in a seminar on ART, then the beginning of the 1960s at what was then the center of research in the U.S. with Peter Bergmann Syracuse University. In Hamburg, he also worked with the cosmologists Otto Heckmann, with whom he 1955 cosmological " Newtonian " found solutions having as the Gödel solution of ART an absolute rotation of the room ( which contradicted the Mach principle). With István Ozsváth he also gave in 1962 a modification of the Gödel solution of a rotating universe as a solution of the ART, which in contrast to this was finally and without closed time-like world lines in space. In 1963 he edited the anthology of the First Texas symposium on relativistic astrophysics with Ivor Robinson and Alfred shield. He was later a professor at New York University.
