Lower Englishman River Falls

The Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is a 97 hectare Provincial Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It lies north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island Iceland in the Regional District of Nanaimo and is accessible via Highway 4A.

Plant

The main attraction of the park are two waterfalls with which the Englishman River plunges into a deep canyon. The park has a picnic area with walking trails and a campsite. In the park is a protected area category II (National Park).

History

The park was established on December 20, 1940 for the protection of the surrounding waterfalls jungle. According to legend, the First Nation, the river got its name because at the waterfall the skeleton of a white man was found.

Flora and Fauna

Within the ecosystem of British Columbia, the park area to the Very Dry Maritime subzone of the Coastal Western Hemlock zone is assigned.

The falls are surrounded by a lush forest, which still consists partly of jungle from ancient and primitive Douglas fir. In addition to the Douglas fir there is also the Western Hemlock and the Nootka cypress and threatened species of the beard thread and the ragwort. The Englishman River is a spawning area of various salmon species. Furthermore, are the park administration to it the green sturgeon would occur.

Activities

Several trails lead through the forest and along the river. Two bridges span the canyon and provide a good view of the falls. The lower waterfall flows into a natural pool where you can swim in the summer. The campsite has 103 pitches.
