Enguerrand II, Count of Ponthieu

Enguerrand II († October 25, 1053 in Saint- Aubin- sur -Scie ) was a Count of Ponthieu and Lord of Aumale. He was the eldest son of Count Hugh II of Ponthieu and Bertha of Aumale.

Enguerrand married Adelheid († 1081/84 ), a daughter of the Norman Duke Robert I the Magnificent. For this he was excommunicated at the Council of Reims in October 1049 because of a too close relatives marriage, because his sister was already married to Count William of Arques, which in turn was an uncle of his wife. From this marriage two children were born:

  • Adélaide, testified in 1098
  • Hélissende; ∞ before 1091 with Hugh II Count of Saint-Pol

After the death of his father in November 1052 Enguerrand Ponthieu took over. In alliance with King Henry I of France, he joined the revolt of William of Arques against his brother, Duke William II ( William the Conqueror ), to. He was killed on October 25 in 1053 in a battle of Saint- Aubin- sur -Scie, his brother Guido I. succeeded him as Count.

Duke William confiscated Aumale after the death Enguerrands and gave it to his widowed sister Adelheid as a county. This second marriage was to Count Lambert of Lens, who fell in battle in 1054 already. Then married Adelheid Count Odo II of Champagne ( † after 1096 ).
