Enoch West

Enoch James West ( born March 31 1886 in Hucknall, † September 1965 ), also known by the nickname Knocker, was an English football player at the position of a striker. He was one of the most successful goalscorers of his two long-standing clubs Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, for whom he played a total of 364 games and scored 180 goals obligation. The negative highlight of his career came in 1914/15, when he was accused, together with other players from Manchester United and Liverpool to be involved in a betting scandal and was banned for life as a player. With a validity of 30 years ( the pardon was only in 1945 ) was his lock the longest in the history of the Football League First Division.

Life

Enoch West began his career in 1903 at Sheffield United, but where he could not prevail. Therefore, two years later he moved to Nottingham Forest, where he completed a total of 183 duty games in the next five years ( League and Cup ) and scored exactly 100 goals. In the history of Forest he is one of only six players who managed to break through the hundred - gate mark. After he was top scorer in the league in the 1907/08 season and had 1909/10 contributed in a game at Manchester United three goals for a 6-2 victory for the Tricky Trees, the Red Devils committed to strong striker, who to the best of his era counted. In the following season in 1910/11 had West contributed significantly to the second title in the history of Manchester United. By 1915, he graduated from competitions 181 appearances for Man Utd and scored a total of 80 goals.

His inglorious career end came in 1915. Together with his teammates Sandy Turnbull and Arthur Whalley and four players of Liverpool FC West was accused of the game the two teams of 2 April 1915 which won the relegation-threatened Red Devils 2-0, manipulated. As a result, West, who protested his innocence again and again, was sentenced to a life ban. It was not until 1945 he was pardoned under a general amnesty.
