Enrique Fernández Arbós

Enrique Fernández Arbós ( born December 24, 1863 in Madrid, † June 2, 1939 in San Sebastián) was a Spanish violinist, conductor and composer.

Life and work

Arbós studied violin first with Jesús Monasterio at the Madrid Conservatory, then at Henri Vieuxtemps at the Brussels Conservatory. In 1881 he completed his studies with Joseph Joachim in Berlin. In 1882 he was concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed both as a soloist as well as in a piano trio, together with Isaac Albeniz and Agustín Rubio. From 1894 to 1915 he was professor of violin and viola at the Royal College of Music.

Shortly after the founding of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid in 1904 took over Arbós whose line he laid down only in 1936 due to the Spanish Civil War. At times he also served as guest conductor with various American orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1932 he led the Spanish premiere of Igor Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps.

Among the compositions of Enrique Fernández Arbós issue also includes the orchestral work Noches de Arabia, songs, the zarzuela El centro de la tierra (1895 premiered in Madrid ) and pieces for piano trio. He also orchestrated parts of Iberia by Albéniz.
