Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires

The Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires (Latin Sanctae Mariae Eparchia a Patrocinio bonaerensis Ucrainorum ) is united with Rome eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Argentina, based in Buenos Aires.

History

The first immigrants from the Ukraine came to Argentina in 1880, they were members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and founded in 1897 in Buenos Aires a mission station. In 1908, the first Chaplain of the Byzantine rite came to Argentina, a majority were members of the Basilian St. Jehoshaphat.

Emergence of communities

Between 1924 and 1945, many members of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Ukrainian fled to Argentina and settled in the provinces of Mendoza, Chaco, Formosa, Corrientes, Cordoba, Santa Fe and the Argentine capital. Since 1936, the religious and diocesan priests working together successfully and supervised the Ukrainian believers.

Pope Pius XI. appointed the Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Constantine Bohacewskyi of Philadelphia (USA ) for apostolic visitor to Argentina. 1961, Pope John XXIII. the Salesian priest Andrés Sapelak, after he had received episcopal ordination in Rome, the new Apostolic Visitor for Argentina.

Establishment of the eparchy

Pope Paul VI. ultimately founded on April 9, 1968, the Apostolic Exarchate of Argentina for all living in Argentina Catholics of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. For the first Apostolic Exarch he appointed Andrés Sapelak. With the Apostolic Constitution Cum praeterito the Exarchate was raised on 24 April 1978 eparchy and received its present name. Work in the field of eparchy, in various organizations and institutions, the Salesians, the Franciscans, the Basilian, the Handmaids of Mary Immaculate and the Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
