Ephraim P. Holmes

Ephraim Paul Holmes ( born May 14, 1908 in Downsville, † February 23, 1997 in Williamsburg ( Virginia)) was an American officer who reached the rank of admiral in the United States Navy.

Military career

He joined in 1930 the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from. The first year of his military career he spent aboard cruisers and destroyers, including on the light cruiser Milwaukee and on the heavy cruiser USS Augusta (CA -31). In 1932 he was on the USS Houston (CA -30), the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet United States displaced and from 1933 to 1935 he served on the destroyer USS Peary (DD -226 ).

He studied communications at the Naval Postgraduate School. After graduation, he served on the USS Maryland ( BB -36). 1939 and witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while serving as a lieutenant on the staff of Commander Battleships, Battle Force. He participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea and had his first command on the newly commissioned destroyer USS Stockham (DD -683 ). He participated in the Battle of the Philippines and the Battle of Saipan with this destroyer. After the war he studied at the Naval War College in Newport, RI and then served in the amphibious fleet of the Atlantic Fleet. He was promoted to the flag rank in 1957 and became Chief of Naval Operations. He was on duty in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and also again in the Pacific, where he commanded the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet and the First Fleet. Prior to his last and highest office as Commander in Chief Atlantic Fleet, he was Director of Marine Planning program, which worked for the Chief of Naval Operations. In 1970 he retired with the rank of Admiral of the military service.
