Naval Postgraduate School

The Naval Postgraduate School ( NPS) is an accredited university in sponsorship of the United States Navy in Monterey ( California). It is used for scientific education and training of officers of all branches of the armed forces of the United States and at the same time as a research institution. In addition to the Naval War College, it is the second educational institution of the U.S. Navy, can / earn the degree of Master of Science in Art at the officers. In their tasks, it is comparable to the Air Force Institute of Technology, U.S. Air Force.

History

The Naval Postgraduate School was founded in 1909 as the School of Marine Engineering by the Secretary of the Navy at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1919 she was renamed the Naval Postgraduate School.

In 1945, she received to confer by resolution of Congress, the right degrees. As part of the restructuring of the Ministry of Defense of the United States in 1947, the Naval Postgraduate School, an independent organizational unit and following laid out in 1952 to Monterey ( California).

Study

The student body consists of officers of all branches of the armed forces of the United States. The proportion of students of foreign forces is approximately 20%. In addition, a smaller number of civilian students from federal and state authorities will allow the study. Prerequisite for admission to the course is A Bachelor's degree, advocacy through the respective department and selection by the NPS. The NPS basically offers only courses for the acquisition of a Master of Science / Art or Doctor of Philosophy / Engineering.

Is studied in quarters, so that it is possible to acquire in one to two years a master. The professors are mostly civilian employees who possess a doctoral degree in their field, and only a small proportion officers.
