Michael Mullen

Michael Glenn Mullen ( born October 4, 1946 in Los Angeles ) is a retired Admiral the U.S. Navy. From October 2007 to September 2011 he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and thus the highest ranking soldier of the U.S. armed forces. Previously, he served as the 28th Chief of Naval Operations (CNO ).

Military career

Mullen joined the United States Naval Academy in 1968. First operations at sea, he completed on the destroyers USS Collett (DD -730 ) and USS Blandy (DD -943 ), and later on the two cruisers USS Belknap Fox (CG -33) and USS Sterett (CG -31).

Mullen commanded in his career three ships: the USS Noxubee ( AOG -56), USS Goldsborough (DDG -20) and the USS Yorktown (CG- 48). Later, he had the command of the Cruiser - Destroyer Group Two and the battle group to the carrier USS George Washington ( CVN -73). His last command at sea was on the second fleet in the Atlantic. From August 2003 to August 2004 Mullen served as Vice Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Vern Clark under. In addition, he had dated 8 October 2004 until 23 May 2005, the command of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe held. On 22 July 2005, he finally took over from Clark the post of Chief of Naval Operations (CNO ).

On 2 August 2007, the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. Senate the nomination of Mullen agreed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Therefore, he took over on October 1, the Office of General Peter Pace, who was, unusually, not nominated for a second two-year term. Mullen was confirmed unanimously by Congress in 2009 for two more years in office and is end of September 2011 left office. His successor is the U.S. Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey. His tenure was characterized among other things by the redemption of Do not ask, do not tell.
