Gary Roughead

Gary Roughead ( born July 15, 1951) is an admiral in the U.S. Navy and served from September 2007 to September 2011 as the 29th Chief of Naval Operations.

Military career

Roughead graduated in 1973 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. His career began on the USS Josephus Daniels ( CG -27), and later he served as first officer on the patrol boats Douglas and Tacoma. Following this, he was chief engineer or chief mate on two destroyers of the Spruance - class, first on the USS O'Bannon (DD -987 ), then on the USS Spruance (DD -963 ). With the command takeover of the USS Barry (DDG -52) and later on the USS Port Royal (CG -73) he was the first officer who had commanded both classes of Aegis ships ( Arleigh Burke-class and Ticonderoga - class).

The first battle group commanded Roughead was the Cruiser Destroyer Group Two, the aircraft carrier battle group led by the USS George Washington ( CVN -73).

Ashore he served in the bars of the Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, the Secretary of the Navy and the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, and had command of the U.S. Naval Academy held. Between 2005 and 2007, Roughead was commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. In May 2007, he took over the command of U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

On 29 September 2007 Roughead took over the post of Chief of Naval Operations by Michael G. Mullen. The successor Rougheads in the post of commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command took over Vice Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert. After four years as Chief of Naval Operations Roughead was in September 2011 to retire. Also known as CNO Greenert inherited him.
