Thomas B. Hayward

Thomas Bibb Hayward ( May 3, 1924 in Glendale, California ) is a retired American admiral of the U.S. Navy and Chief of Naval Operations.

Biography

After schooling he was 1947 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and then joined the U.S. Navy.

During his military career, he became in 1971 director of the Office of Program Evaluation of the Navy (Office of Program Appraisal) in the Ministry of Defense of the United States as well as in the port from 1973 to 1975 director of the Marine Program Planning ( Navy Program Planning) in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

After a subsequent year stint as commander of operating in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean, the U.S. 7th Fleet, he was from 12 August 1976 to May 9, 1978 Supreme Commander stationed in Pearl Harbor, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

On 1 July 1978 Admiral Thomas B. Hayward eventually became chief of naval operations (Chief of Naval Operations ) and thus to the highest-ranking officer and Chief of the General Staff of the U.S. Navy. While serving his wife Peggy Hayward was on November 25, 1978 godmother at the launching of the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA -5). He held until his retirement on June 30, 1982 This function.

For his military services he was awarded several times and has won both the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Legion of Merit. In addition, he was involved in the Council on Foreign Relations.
