George Scratchley Brown

George Scratchley Brown ( born August 17, 1918 in Montclair, New Jersey, † December 5, 1978 in Washington, DC) was an American general in the U.S. Air Force and both Chief of Staff of the Air Force as well as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Biography

After school he studied at the University of Missouri. He then joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and was 1941 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

During his military career, he was in 1970 commander of the Air Force Systems Command in the Defense of the United States as a general. After three years he was on 1 August 1973 Chief of Staff of the Air Force (Chief of Staff of the Air Force).

Eleven months later, finally took place on July 2, 1974 he was appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ( Joint Chiefs of Staff ). He held until his retirement on 20 June 1978, this function.

After his death from prostate cancer a few months after his retirement, he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
