Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 33-41 millimeters. The front wings are freshly hatched specimens of blue-gray or steel gray, and are quickly whitish to silvery gray, the costal edge dark becoming. The f Lutosa has more yellow and gray uniform colored forewings. The lower part of the center panel to the dorsum back and the Saumfeld are tinted purple or maroon. The transverse lines are wavy and double drawn, but indistinct. Ring and kidney blemish are outlined in black with a red-brown spot in the center. The hind wings are yellow with a dark brown to black outseam without center spot.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The eggs are spherical with sharp longitudinal ribs and of white -yellow color and a red spotted bandage in the upper third. The lower pole is strongly flattened. The caterpillars have a purple-brown base color with a fine, dark- bordered, white topline and white side ridge lines, which are bounded below reddish. Between the lines there are distinct black spots wedge. The relatively slim doll is shiny brown and has on the cremaster two fine points.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is found in Central and Southern Europe to southern Russia spread before, also in northwest Africa and the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel ), and the Caucasus region, up to Turkmenistan. In the north it extends to southern Scandinavia and the Baltic countries (where only an isolated occurrence on the island of Ruhnu, Estonia). You lack in the British Isles. The Silver Grey Bandeule prefers warm dry and open areas with mostly sandy soil. In Central Europe it is only in the plane prior to the highlands into it. In Southern Europe, however, it rises up to 2200 meters.

Way of life

The Silver Grey Bandeule forms in Central Europe one generation per year, the moths fly between July and early September. In Southern Europe, the moths fly from June already well into September; they hold here but a summer break. The moths are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources. Visit flowers and come to the bait. The caterpillars are usually found in October. They feed on the leaves of various herbaceous plants (eg Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) and primrose (Primula ) ) and " grasses " ( Poaceae ). The adult caterpillar resting during the day hiding and come out at night from their hiding places to eat. They overwinter and pupate in April of the following year in a Erdkokon.
