Name

The name " Epipactis " was first used by Theophrastus, a philosopher and botanist of ancient Greece. However, both he, and botanist of the Middle Ages, such as Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame and Victor Albrecht von Haller did not use the name for the current orchids genus Epipactis, but for other plant species. The name is still used today as Epipactis orchids genus was erected in 1757 by Johann Gottfried Zinn, a professor of botany at Göttingen.

Description

There are perennial herbaceous plants.

System

The first description of the genus Epipactis by the German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn was published in 1757 in his Catalogus Plantarum Horti Academici et Agri Gottingensis.
