Epitácio Pessoa

Epitácio Lindolfo da Silva Pessoa (* May 23, 1865 in Umbuzeiro, Paraíba, † February 13, 1942 in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian lawyer and politician, and on 28 July 1919 and November 15, 1922 President of Brazil. He was a member of the Partido Republicano Mineiro and was elected by direct and universal suffrage.

Life

1873 lost the young Pessoa Epitácio his parents by the outbreak of smallpox. He was taught at a state school and by his uncle Henrique Pereira de Lucena ( Barao de Lucena ), the governor of Pernambuco, supported. He made 1886 his law degree and served from 1887 to 1889 as a prosecutor in Bom Jardim and Cabo ( Pernambuco).

After the proclamation of the Republic of Silva Pessoa took over as first tasks in the civil service of the province of Paraíba. November 15, 1898 to August 6, 1901 he was Justice and Home Affairs in the Cabinet of President Campos Sales and worked on a design for the Civil Code. From 25 January 1902 to 17 August 1912, he belonged to the Supreme Court to ( Supremo Tribunal Federal ). At the same time he was on June 7, 1902 to October 21, 1905 to the Prosecutor of the Republic. In 1912 he was elected Senator in Paraíba - an office which he held until 1916.

While he represented Brazil at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, he was elected on 13 April 1919 President. During his reign the coffee price fell by about half, which had a strong impact on the Brazilian economy. Center of opposition was the State of Rio Grande do Sul, whose politicians with those from the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro ReAction Republicana founded to prevent the " coffee oligarchy " in the election of Artur da Silva Bernardes the next president, but this failed.

From 1923 to 1930 Pessoa worked as a judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice in The Hague.

Pessoa suffered in the last years of his life with Parkinson's disease.
