Erhard Altdorfer

Erhard Altdorfer (also Erhart Altdorfer; * probably after 1480 in Regensburg; † after 1561 in Schwerin ) was a German draftsman, painter and architect who served as court painter from 1512 to 1561 in Schwerin.

Life

Erhard Altdorfer was the younger brother of Albrecht Altdorfer, of which he was probably trained and with whom he probably made around 1506 a workshop community. Around 1510 a work for the Austrian pins Lambach, St. Florian and Klosterneuburg is suspected, where he probably first time with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder. might have come into contact. 1512 he moved to Schwerin, where he had been appointed Duke Henry V ( " the Peaceable " ) of Mecklenburg- Schwerin as court painter and architect. On a trip with the Duke he will probably have 1512 also met Lucas Cranach. A 1516 on behalf of the Dukes Henry and Albert VII created altar for the Holy Blood Chapel of the town church Sternberg Sternberg was destroyed by fire in 1741.

For the 1533/34 in Lübeck in the Low German transmission of Johannes Bugenhagen at Ludwig Dietz published Bible he delivered woodcuts. For his work, he is rewarded by the Duke in 1537 with a house. Between 1546 and 1551 he won many contracts which, however, are so general that you can take it no longer. From 1552, he was acquired by Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg on the written request of Duke Henry. For Duke Johann Albrecht I, he was 1552-1555 probably the chief architect of the princely court in Wismar. Against 1561, he is the last time mentioned.

He lobbied to closely related panel painter and at least parts of altars in the collection of the St. Anne's Convent Lübeck attributed to him directly.

Unlike his brother, Erhard Altdorfer shows less independently and creatively in his artistic work and engages in many cases back to pre- patterns of other artists such as his brother, Jacopo de ' Barbari, and above all the Cranach workshop. He worked primarily as an illustrator and graphic designer and has apparently created a few paintings. Few of his works are signed, so that a large part of the assigned work today are simply attributions.
