Erhard Reuwich

Erhard Reuwich (also Reeuwijk, Reeuwyck, Reeuwich, Rewich; * around 1450 in Utrecht, † after 1505 in Mainz ) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter and draftsman. He is considered the first well known name book illustrator.

Life

Reuwich was born in Utrecht and worked from 1475 to probably around 1500 in Mainz in the vicinity of the cathedral chapter.

1483/1484 he accompanied the canon Bernhard von Breidenbach on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His sketches, which included a map of Venice and overall views of Corfu and Rhodes were later cut in wood and attached to the printed with the printing types by Peter Schoeffer in February 1486 in Mainz Travelogue " Peregrinatio in terram sanctam ".
