Eric Gale

Eric J. Gale ( born September 20, 1938 in Brooklyn, † 25 May 1994, Baja California, Mexico) was an American guitarist in the fields of Rhythm and Blues, Fusion, Easy Listening and Jazz.

Life and work

At the age of 12 he began teaching himself the guitar. Although he had a degree in chemistry at Niagara University, he turned to music. He was a sideman by Maxine Brown, The Drifters, and Jesse Belvin, but took off in 1963 with King Curtis on. As a session musician, he was known in the 1960s and was involved in recordings by Aretha Franklin, Bob James, Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Smith, and Sonny Stitt. In the studio, he worked on about 500 albums, especially for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Among the artists whose recordings he worked on include Stanley Turrentine, Paul Simon, Lena Horne, Quincy Jones, Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Peter Tosh, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Mann, Esther Phillips, Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, Van Morrison, Al Jarreau, Phil Upchurch and Billy Joel. For a time he was also a guitarist in Aretha Franklin's stage band. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he performed with Stuff, a New York jazz funk band.
