Erkki-Sven Tüür

Erkki -Sven Tüür ( born October 16, 1959 in Kärdla, Hiiumaa, Estonia) is an Estonian composer.

Life

After self-taught beginnings Tüür studied from 1976 to 1980, first flute and percussion at the Tallinn Music School. From 1980 to 1984 he studied composition with Jaan Rääts at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn, as well as privately with Lepo Sumera.

From 1979 to 1984 he was a composer, flutist, keyboardist and singer and founder of the chamber rock ensemble In Spe, which quickly became one of the most popular rock groups in Estonia.

From 1989 to 1992 he taught composition at the Estonian Academy of Music.

To Tüür significant works are period, action, passion and illusion. Tüür combines modern elements such as clusters, polyrhythms, atonality and layers of sound with its traditional diatonic modality and triadic harmony, with a core factor is the reconciliation between musical worlds. In 2002 he composed " Magma ", a work for percussion and orchestra with hints of rock music. He dedicated this composition of the Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie.

Erkki -Sven Tüür is co-founder of the Festival of Contemporary Music Nyyd ( "Now" ).
