Ernest de Sarzec

Ernest de Sarzec (full name Gustave Charles Ernest Chocquin, since 1880 de Sarzec; born August 11, 1832 in Rennes, † May 31, 1901 in Poitiers) was a French diplomat and archaeologist. He is considered the discoverer of the Sumerian culture.

Ernest de Sarzec joined in 1875 to his new position as vice-consul of France in Basra after he had previously been 1872-1875 Vice-Consul of France in the Egyptian Massawa, with authority to act also against Ethiopia.
