Ernest McCulloch

Ernest Armstrong McCulloch ( * April 27, 1926 in Toronto, † January 19, 2011 in Washington, DC) was a Canadian hematologist and professor at the University of Toronto.

McCulloch is considered one of the pioneers of stem cell research. He and James Till jointly identified the stem cell and thus laid the foundations of stem cell research and the study of hematopoiesis.

Life

McCulloch graduated in 1948 his studies in medicine at the University of Toronto with distinction with the MD from. He then spent a year of research at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. First clinical experience acquired McCulloch 1949-1952 at the Toronto General Hospital, after which he worked at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. 1954 McCulloch joined as a clinical teacher at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto. In 1958 he took over the management of the Division of Hematology at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto. In the Department of Medical Biophysics he first took over a junior professorship ( Assistant Professor in 1959, Associate Professor 1964), 1966 a full professorship. In 1970 he became a professor in internal medicine. In 1982 he became Professor Emeritus.

McCulloch was until recently worked in research at the Ontario Cancer Institute and dealt with the growth of malignant tumor cells blastärer in acute myeloid leukemia.

Awards (selection)

The Stem Cell Network, an association of Canadian stem cell researcher, has awarded since 2005, Till and McCulloch Award for outstanding research in the field of stem cell research.
