Ernie Carson

Ernie Carson ( born December 4, 1937 in Portland ( Oregon), † January 9, 2012 ) was an American musician (cornet, trumpet, piano, vocals) of Dixieland.

Life and work

Carson began his primary school days playing trumpet and worked during his high school years as a musician in theater bands. His professional career began in 1954-56 as a member of the Castle Jazz Band before he performed for two years military service in the Marines. In Los Angeles, he then played in groups with Dave Wierbach, Jig Adams and Ray Bauduc, after 1961/62 at Turk Murphy. Carson led occasionally own formations like the Capital City Jazz Band (from 1972) and the Castle Jazz Band ( from 1992). He played from the 1970s in the Dixieland scene of Atlanta; he lived in the 1980s and 1990s in New Orleans, before he returned to Portland. During his time in New Orleans, he recorded with Pud Brown ( Palm Court Strut ), Wild Bill Davison, Nick Fatool, Rick Fay, Art Hodes, Helen Humes and Tony Parenti and played in various bands in the city. Under his own name he presented albums for the label Pearl ( 1964), Jazzology, GHB, Fat Cat 's Jazz and Stomp Off.
