Ernst Elias Niebergall

Ernst Elias Niebergall ( born January 13, 1815 in Darmstadt, † April 19, 1843 ) was a German writer.

Life

Niebergall 1832-1835 studied theology at the University of Giessen, where he was 1832/33 Member of the Old Giessen fraternity Germania and 1833 the Corps Palatia. He then worked as a teacher of Latin, Greek and history in Dieburg and from 1840 in Darmstadt.

In the years 1837-1841 Niebergall published under the pseudonyms Ernst Streff, E. Streff or E. St., especially in the Didaskalia. His best-known work today is the spectacle in südhessischer dialect Datterich (1841 ), a well liked nowadays listed Darmstadt Local Posse. The most famous is a television version with Joseph Offenbach in the lead role.

Niebergall not live to see the premiere of his piece: It was not until 1862 in Bessungen instead.

The city of Darmstadt has named a small street in the St. Paul district after him, the Niebergallweg; front of the town library is now a " Datterich Fountain " with moving figures of the main characters of the play. On the 150th anniversary of the death of the famous son of the city a gold commemorative coin issued in 1993.
