Ernst Falkbeer

Ernst ( or Ernest ) Karl Falk Beer ( * June 27, 1819 in Brno, † December 14, 1885 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chess master.

Life

Ernst Falk Beer came to Vienna to study law, but dropped out of education and became a journalist and staff liberal foreign newspapers. In the revolutionary year of 1848 he had to flee from Vienna to Germany. In Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden and Bremen he found worthy chess partner. He has played with Anderssen and Dufresne.

In 1853 he was able to return to Vienna, where two years later he founded the Viennese chess newspaper. He then went to England and led the chess column in the Sunday Times in London. In many individual competitions, including against Bird and Brien, he proved his master strength. In the tournament of Birmingham 1858, he took second place.

Falk Beers best historical Elo rating was 2524th This he reached in January 1856. During the years 1855-1858 he was several times in 5th place in the world rankings.

Falk Beer also contributed to chess theory, he led was named after him Falk Beer- counter-gambit in the tournament practice - a promising attempt to take over in the King's Gambit as a result of moving through a pawn sacrifice the initiative to narrow the opponents. Tarrasch was even of the opinion that so the King's Gambit is refuted.
