Ernst Gottfried Baldinger

Ernst Gottfried Baldinger ( born May 13, 1738 in Großvargula; † January 21, 1804 in Marburg ) was a German physician.

Life

From his father, a Protestant pastor, intended for the study of theology, he went in 1754 to the University of Erfurt. However, he turned to a study of medicine and studied in Halle ( Saale) and Jena, where he in 1760 the medical doctor degree acquired later. He gave private lectures on medicine and made ​​the decision to habilitate in Erfurt. During the Seven Years' War, he joined as a medical officer in the Prussian service.

During this time he witnessed the siege of Torgau and received permission from his superiors in 1762 to resume his philosophical and medical studies again. On April 30, 1762, he had acquired the philosophical master's degree in Wittenberg and enrolled for further continuation on 14 October 1762 Leucorea. In 1763 he settled as a physician in Langensalza, from where he qualified as a professor in 1768. In 1764, he married Friderika Gutbier.

Attracted attention was on him not only for his practical activity, but also by his literary achievements. Hence there was in 1768 a reputation as a full professor in Jena. In 1770 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. 1773 he was appointed to Göttingen and in 1783 appointed by the Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse -Kassel conductor of the medical affairs of the country and personal physician.

In 1785 he followed a calls as the first professor of medicine in Marburg. During his time, the anatomical theater was rebuilt, enlarged the botanical garden, newly founded a chemical laboratory, a Midwives Institute and created a veterinary school. After a restless life, he died of a heart attack.

Baldinger was one of the most important physicians of his time. Through his writings he awakened among his contemporaries a sense of the study of ancient classical medicine and medical literature. His students included Justus Arne man, Johann Christian Gottlieb Ackermann and others.

His writings belong to different areas of medicine, he worked as editor of various magazines from 1766, where he authored a wealth of historical and literary articles. It was his special interest and biographical notices of literary history. In numerous occasional papers he presented to, among other critical studies on the older medicine.

Baldinger was a member of the Masonic Lodge " Frederick of friendship " in Kassel. According to him, the Baldinger Street in the University area Lahnberge is named in Marburg.

Family

Baldinger was married twice. His first wife was 1764 Friderika Gutbier ( 1739-1786 ), she was the daughter of the pastor Gutbier from Langensalza. The couple had six children - four sons and two daughters - of whom only survived two daughters:
