Ernst Sellin

Ernst Sellin ( born May 26, 1867 in Alt Schwerin, Mecklenburg, † January 1, 1946 in Epichnellen, Thuringia ) was a German theologian and Biblical Archaeologist. As one of the first high school teacher, he joined the Old Testament science of archeology.

Life

Ernst Sellin, a son of evangelical pastor Wilhelm Sellin (1838-1931) and the pharmacist 's daughter Ida born Rötger (1844-1923), studied Protestant theology and Oriental Studies at the University of Rostock, Friedrich -Alexander- University of Erlangen and the University of Leipzig. In Leipzig he was 1889 Dr. phil. doctorate.

From 1891 to 1894 he worked as a school teacher in Parchim. Subsequently, he was a lecturer from 1894 to 1897 in Erlangen and then served as a professor at the Universities of Vienna ( 1897-1908 ), Rostock ( 1908-1913 ), Kiel ( 1913-1921 ) and Berlin ( 1921-1935 ). From 1919 to 1921 he was twice president of the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel.

Sellin recognized early the importance of archeology in relation to his theological work and led from 1902 to 1904 the excavations at Tell Ta'anach in Palestine. Another focus of his work formed the archaeological exploration of Jericho ( Tell es Sultan ) from 1907 to 1909 and Shechem (Tell Balata, 1913-1914 ). Sellin published numerous works, his most important, the textbook Introduction to the Old Testament (1910, 11th edition 1969 last edited by Georg Fohrer ), was regarded as a standard work for generations.

Sellin introduced in the early 20th century, the thesis that Moses had been killed as "martyrs " of the Israelites. In his study, The Man Moses and the Monotheistic Religion Sigmund Freud is also based on findings Sellin.
