Ernst Windisch

Ernst Wilhelm Oskar Windisch ( born September 4, 1844 in Dresden, † October 30, 1918 in Leipzig ) was a German linguist, Sanskritist and Keltologe.

Life

Ernst Windisch was born as the son of the teacher Louis W. Windisch and Caroline Lamb. He attended from 1857 to 1863 the Cross school in Dresden and then studied until 1867 Classical Philology and Linguistics at the University of Leipzig. He then earned his PhD. in classical philology with a thesis De hymnis homericis maioribus.

From 1867 to 1870 he worked as a teacher at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. At the same time he completed his habilitation thesis on studies on the origin of the relative pronoun in the Indo-European languages. 1870 and 1871 he lived in London, where he was involved in the cataloging of the Sanskrit manuscripts in the Indian Office Library and studied the Celtic languages ​​. In 1871, he returned as an associate professor in Leipzig. In 1872 he became a full professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Heidelberg. In 1875 he accepted a call to a similar professorship at the University of Strasbourg, before he became a professor of Sanskrit in 1877 in Leipzig, where he stayed until his death in 1918. He was also director of the Indo-European Institute ibid.

Windisch also known as Indo-Europeanist and as a friend of the young Friedrich Nietzsche.

On April 18, 1873 he married Berta Roscher, the daughter of Wilhelm Roscher economists. My children were William ( born May 8, 1874 a high school teacher ), Helene ( born July 19, 1876), Hermann ( born August 3, 1878 Jurist ), Hans ( born April 25, 1881 theologian ) and Charles (born 16 July 1885, lawyer ).
